| Kermit, Martie, and Virginia were siblings. All born in Illinois and the children of newspaper man Addison Dart and his wife, Rena Belle. Kermit moved to California as an adult and married Irene Vermillion, a "dancer, acrobat, and contortionist". Kermit sent for his sisters to start a performing group. All five of the Dart children were musical. As children growing up, there was not a lot of entertainment in those days and the Dart kids would perform musicals in the evenings and on the weekends. Kermit was very talented as he could play the piano, accordion, and compose music. Kermit wrote most of the compositions that the Vermillion Trumpeteers performed. Martie quit the group in the late1930's and her sister Virginia quit soon after. Kermit and Irene continued to perform. In 1940, Irene and Kermit performed with the house band at the Lyric Theater in Indianapolis (were Frank Sinatra debuted) . History courtesy of Shannon McClendon |

| Martie hoped to be an actress and she won a contest as a Jeanette MacDonald look alike. Martie joined the Irene Vermillion group in 1932. The group toured all over the United States, Canada, and Mexico. In 1937, they travelled overseas to england, Austrailia, and New Zealand. In 1936, just before the group went overseas, Martie met Shannon's Grandfather at a show in San Bernadino. When they returned, they married, which was the end of her acting aspirations. Martie was a great seamstress and she made all of their costumes while on the road. History and photographs courtesy of Shannon McClendon Unauthorized use is prohibited. |
