H. N. WHITE KINGS
Ziggy Elman
Born Harry Aaron Finkelman in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. At four years of age his family moved to Atlantic City.  
Harry in his teenage years played clarinet, baritone sax and trombone. He also studied violin and piano as his father was
a klezmer violin
ist. At 15, Harry played for Jewish weddings and at nightclubs. In the early 1930's, Harry changed his
name to Ziggy Elman. Ziggy played trombone in Alex Bartha'a group often playing at the "Steel Pier" in Atlantic City,
where he made his recording debut. In 1936, Ziggy Elman became the lead trumpet player for the Benny Goodman
orchestra. In 1940, Ziggy joined Tommy Dorsey's orchestra. Ziggy was a major endorsement player of H. N. White
King trumpets, playing the
2B Liberty and popular Super 20 trumpet. Ziggy and his good friend Charlie Shavers, both
favored the H. N. White King Super 20 trumpet, and they both spent many hours with engineers at the H. N. White
King factory.  Ziggy served in the United States Air Force during the war and later rejoined Tommy Dorsey's
orchestra. Ziggy was honored in Down Beat magazines readers polls six times from 1940 to 1947. In 1947, Ziggy
organized his own band. Ziggy's band stayed together for two years. Ziggy became a studio player in the early 1950's.
By 1956 Ziggy was retiring due to health problems. Ziggy operated a music store and played on occassion in his later
years. Ziggy died at 54 years of age and was buried at Mount Sinai Memorial Park Cemetery.
